Winter Ecology Speaker Series: Managing habitats for birds at Springbrook Prairie
Joe Suchecki is a Volunteer Steward for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County at Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve in Naperville.
Springbrook Prairie is an 1800-acre forest preserve and designated Illinois Nature Preserve in Naperville. Originally purchased to maintain public open space in southwestern DuPage County, the site was farmland with minimal natural habitat when it was purchased in the 1970s. The site has undergone periodic restoration since the 1980s. The primary focus of restoration and management of this large natural area is creating and maintaining habitat for the suites of grassland, wetland and shrubland birds. Joe has led the volunteer efforts and bird monitoring at Springbrook Prairie for 27 years and will share his insights on successful management of large-scale sites for native birds as well as current restoration and management issues.
